Bringing the Harlem Renaissance to Life for a Book & Author Luncheon Overview
Hip Rock Star Advertising has had the privilege of working with more than two dozen chapters of The Links, Incorporated across the country. Our services have ranged from virtual event production and streaming to creative direction, branding, logistics and full-service event management.
One of our most memorable engagements was a private Book & Author Luncheon featuring award-winning journalist and author A’Lelia Bundles and her book, Joy Goddess. From the stunning Harlem Renaissance welcome to the inspiring author conversation, the event was a true reflection of legacy in action.
Our team conceived and managed the experience from the initial idea through final execution, transforming a traditional literary luncheon into an immersive celebration of history, fashion, culture and storytelling.
The Vision
The client wanted the luncheon to honor the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance while creating a sophisticated and engaging experience for guests. The event needed to celebrate A’Lelia Bundles, connect attendees to the world represented in Joy Goddess and build excitement well before guests entered the venue.
Our creative direction centered on bringing the elegance, creativity and cultural influence of the Harlem Renaissance into every stage of the guest journey.

Building Anticipation Before the Event
The guest experience began long before the luncheon.
Our team developed vintage-inspired promotional materials that reflected the look and energy of historic theater marquees. These designs incorporated imagery, typography, colors and decorative elements associated with the Harlem Renaissance, establishing the event’s visual identity and building anticipation among invited guests.
To help attendees fully embrace the theme, we also created curated fashion lookbooks featuring Harlem Renaissance-inspired clothing and accessories. The guides gave guests visual inspiration for what to wear while making the dress code feel approachable, exciting and connected to the event’s cultural story.
This pre-event engagement helped guests understand that they were not simply attending a luncheon—they were preparing to step into an experience.
Creative Direction and Branding
Hip Rock Star Advertising developed a cohesive visual environment inspired by the glamour, artistry and cultural energy of the Harlem Renaissance.
The branding extended across:
-
Invitations and pre-event communications
-
Vintage marquee-inspired promotional graphics
-
Guest fashion lookbooks
-
Welcome signage and registration materials
-
Stage and program branding
-
Printed collateral and event materials
-
Tabletop and environmental elements
-
Book-signing areas
-
Custom photo opportunities
-
Digital and social media content
-
The vintage aesthetic was carefully integrated throughout the experience without allowing the event to feel like a costume party or historical reproduction. Instead, the design honored the era while maintaining the sophistication expected of a private literary luncheon.
The Guest Experience
From the moment guests arrived, they were welcomed into a thoughtfully designed Harlem Renaissance environment. The décor, signage, music, fashion and branded installations worked together to establish a strong sense of time and place.
Our team created memorable photo opportunities that allowed guests to interact with the theme and capture themselves within the visual story. These moments encouraged organic participation, conversation and content sharing while reinforcing the event’s branding.
The program’s centerpiece was an inspiring conversation with A’Lelia Bundles. Her appearance connected the creative environment to the deeper historical and cultural themes explored in Joy Goddess. The author discussion, audience engagement and book-signing experience were carefully coordinated to maintain an intimate atmosphere while keeping the program moving smoothly.

Technical checks and program rehearsals were conducted to confirm staging, sound, lighting, speaker cues, presentations and transitions. Contingency plans were also established to address potential changes involving timing, technology, guest flow or program participants.
On event day, our team managed both the guest-facing experience and the behind-the-scenes production, allowing chapter leadership to focus on welcoming members, engaging with the author and enjoying the occasion.
The Outcome
The Book & Author Luncheon successfully transformed a literary program into an immersive celebration of Black history, style and storytelling.
The Harlem Renaissance theme was reflected in every detail—from the vintage marquee-inspired branding and curated fashion lookbooks to the elaborate welcome experience, interactive photo moments and featured conversation with A’Lelia Bundles.
The event generated excitement before the doors opened, encouraged guests to participate in the theme and created an environment worthy of the history and legacy represented in Joy Goddess.
Most importantly, the experience demonstrated how thoughtful creative direction and disciplined production management can elevate a private event. Every touchpoint worked together to tell one cohesive story—one that celebrated the past while presenting legacy as something vibrant, relevant and still in motion.
