Dr. Cornel West Kicks Off Black History Month in the City of North Miami

Scholar and civil rights activist Cornel West is coming to North Miami on Friday to discuss education — and likely much more — as the city kicks off programming for Black History Month.  The focus of the discussion, at North Miami Senior High, will be “The Crisis in Black Education,” a theme for the city’s Black History Month events.

West, 63, is a scholar in several subjects, including race, African-American and civil rights history, politics, philosophy and theology. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in three years and went on to earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in philosophy from Princeton.


Visions of our 44th President Barack Obama Exhibition

Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. (BAHRFSF) invites revelers to help it commemorate 40 years as one of the region’s premier repositories of Black contributions, heritage, and culture.

BAHRFSF is poised to launch a yearlong celebration with the Visions of Our 44th President Barack Obama exhibition featuring 44 realistic, life-sized busts of the president designed, painted, and embellished by forty-four contemporary African American artists.

Visions will open to a private media reception on November 29, a cocktail opening reception on November 30 ($150 Black Archives Members and $250 Non-Members), and to the general public on December 1. The presidential exposition is housed at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex, 819 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida 33136.

Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce 11th Annual Holiday Gala

MIAMI (WSVN) - The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce presented its 11th annual holiday gala to celebrate South Florida’s multi-cultural business community, Saturday night.

The black tie gala brought in a crowd of local politicians and business executives.  Guests were treated to a special performance from Grammy Award-winning singer Howard Hewett, as well as cocktails and a silent auction in Jungle Island’s treetop ballroom.  7News’ own Donovan Campbell served as the gala master of ceremony.

Second Baptist Church in Richmond Heights wants to empower its youth through events in the community with other organizations.

On Friday, Second Baptist hosted “Our Youth Can Save the World,” a peace rally in partnership with the church Community Development Corp., aimed at eradicating violence, bullying, hate crimes and difficulties that trouble and challenge young people in South Dade.


Original Tuskegee Airman and Original Richmond Heights Resident Dies at 97

Lt. Colonel Eldridge Franklin Williams, United States Air Force retired, Tuskegee Airman, age 97, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 2, 2015 at his residence. He was surrounded by his companion, Dr. Rosa L. White, his nurse and a close friend.
